Thaddeus Bartholomewâs study was accessible only by a private elevator tucked under one of the staircases in the entrance hall. After the elevator door closed, the carriage began to vibrate.
Minna frowned. âAre we moving up or down? I canât tell.â A sudden change of direction sent her lurching into Evanâs arms. âOh, sorry!â
With a grin, he set her on her feet. âSideways, it seems. Iâve never taken this elevator before, but itâs magic. Thereâs no telling where weâll stop.â
She gripped one of the handrails for balance. After several more changes of direction, the doors opened to reveal the interior of a handsomely appointed railway carriage. Rows of seats were situation to either side, with a red carpeted aisle down the middle.
Evan chuckled. âA train? This is novel.â
âAnd quite elegant.â She peered at the sunlit moors and languid waterways visible through the windows. âItâs daytime, and weâre moving.â
âObviously an illusion of some kind.â Evan turned around just as the elevator doors transformed into the back window of a caboose. âThis is an impressive bit of magic, even for Mr. Bartholomew.â
âIndeed, it is, but thereâs no one here but us. I thought we were to join him in his study?â
He shrugged. âLetâs work our way forward until we find him.â
To Minnaâs surprise, the view visible from the next train carriage featured the glorious buttes, endless sand, and rock sculptures of a desert.
âWhat is this?â She gaped. âDoes each railway carriage have a different view?â
âI donât know.â Evan made a gesture of invitation. âLetâs find out.â
The landscape visible from the forward carriage resembled a rain forest, complete with waterfalls and exotic, colorful birds and flowers.
Minna smiled with pleasure. âI like this view best. Itâs so very tranquil.â
âI would have termed it romantic.â
âWith a name like Valentine, you ought to be careful with that sort of comment. You could accidentally give a girl ideas.â
Sheâd meant the remark to be teasing, but it came out as flirtatious.
Evan lifted one of his eyebrows. âPerhaps it wouldnât be accidental.â
When she met his gaze, the atmosphere suddenly seemed thicker than it had moments before.
âYouâre not serious.â
âWould that be a problem for you if I was?â
Her mouth went dry. âY-You donât know me at all.â
He moved closer. âIâd like to know you better, if youâd let me.â
When Evan slid his arm around her waist, ripples of pleasure ran down her spine and made her nerves tingle.
âDo you feel that?â His lips hovered over hers. âItâs the same sensation I felt when we first met.â
âYes.â She wanted nothing more than to melt into him, but she fought to keep control. âI feel the same thing, butâ¦â Minna gently disentangled herself and stepped away ââ¦this isnât the time or the place. First, we must capture Ned Rooney.â
âAh. I almost forgotâ¦timing is everything.â He took a deep breath. âAnd Ned Rooney is just the topic to dampen my ardor.â
She couldnât suppress a smile. âSorry.â
Evan returned her smile with a crooked one of his own. âSo weâll revisit this discussion after we have that reprobate sorted out?â
She averted her eyes.
