Thaddeus Bartholomew’s study was accessible only by a private elevator tucked under one of the staircases in the entrance hall. After the elevator door closed, the carriage began to vibrate.

Minna frowned. “Are we moving up or down? I can’t tell.” A sudden change of direction sent her lurching into Evan’s arms. “Oh, sorry!”

With a grin, he set her on her feet. “Sideways, it seems. I’ve never taken this elevator before, but it’s magic. There’s no telling where we’ll stop.”

She gripped one of the handrails for balance. After several more changes of direction, the doors opened to reveal the interior of a handsomely appointed railway carriage. Rows of seats were situation to either side, with a red carpeted aisle down the middle.

Evan chuckled. “A train? This is novel.”

“And quite elegant.” She peered at the sunlit moors and languid waterways visible through the windows. “It’s daytime, and we’re moving.”

“Obviously an illusion of some kind.” Evan turned around just as the elevator doors transformed into the back window of a caboose. “This is an impressive bit of magic, even for Mr. Bartholomew.”

“Indeed, it is, but there’s no one here but us. I thought we were to join him in his study?”

He shrugged. “Let’s work our way forward until we find him.”

To Minna’s surprise, the view visible from the next train carriage featured the glorious buttes, endless sand, and rock sculptures of a desert.

“What is this?” She gaped. “Does each railway carriage have a different view?”

“I don’t know.” Evan made a gesture of invitation. “Let’s find out.”

The landscape visible from the forward carriage resembled a rain forest, complete with waterfalls and exotic, colorful birds and flowers.

Minna smiled with pleasure. “I like this view best. It’s so very tranquil.”

“I would have termed it romantic.”

“With a name like Valentine, you ought to be careful with that sort of comment. You could accidentally give a girl ideas.”

She’d meant the remark to be teasing, but it came out as flirtatious.

Evan lifted one of his eyebrows. “Perhaps it wouldn’t be accidental.”

When she met his gaze, the atmosphere suddenly seemed thicker than it had moments before.

“You’re not serious.”

“Would that be a problem for you if I was?”

Her mouth went dry. “Y-You don’t know me at all.”

He moved closer. “I’d like to know you better, if you’d let me.”

When Evan slid his arm around her waist, ripples of pleasure ran down her spine and made her nerves tingle.

“Do you feel that?” His lips hovered over hers. “It’s the same sensation I felt when we first met.”

“Yes.” She wanted nothing more than to melt into him, but she fought to keep control. “I feel the same thing, but…” Minna gently disentangled herself and stepped away “…this isn’t the time or the place. First, we must capture Ned Rooney.”

“Ah. I almost forgot…timing is everything.” He took a deep breath. “And Ned Rooney is just the topic to dampen my ardor.”

She couldn’t suppress a smile. “Sorry.”

Evan returned her smile with a crooked one of his own. “So we’ll revisit this discussion after we have that reprobate sorted out?”

She averted her eyes.
